The drug, used to treat erectile dysfunction, is being recalled from its U. S. pharmacies after regulators found it contained an unapproved drug.
A spokeswoman for a San Diego-based drugmaker told CBS4's "vertisements for Viagra" on the site that the drug had been found to contain sildenafil, or Viagra. The FDA is warning that the undeclared drug may have an impact on the health of men with erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said in a statement that the recall "is not medically necessary and is not medically necessary for the product to have been recalled."
A spokesman for Pfizer, which markets the drug, declined to comment on the drug's safety but said the drug is generally well tolerated.
The drug is sold in more than 100 countries, including the United States and Canada, and is generally safe. The Food and Drug Administration has not made any changes to its warning for sildenafil, or the affected ingredient.
In 2011, the FDA said it may have found the drug could cause "severe, even life-threatening side effects."
In June, FDA regulators ordered the recall of Pfizer's drug after an analysis of more than 40 studies revealed that there were no "serious side effects."
In response, the drug's manufacturer, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, agreed to submit a recall request. The FDA said it believed the drugs contained sildenafil, or Viagra, that had been found in some cases to be "inflamed or misbranded."
Pfizer said it would be reviewing the FDA's recall request and would make a decision on whether to add the drug to its list of approved products.
